Roland loves to draw. He is an artist in his own right. He sits at the table with TJ as they each sketch their own masterpiece. TJ loves watching him draw and then taking a break to enjoy playing some of the older Nintendo video games. They hang out together, and although TJ is almost nonverbal, they enjoy one another’s presence. Roland talks about his artwork and why he chose to sketch it to engage TJ.
TJ doesn’t speak much but nods and smiles. You can tell that TJ looks forward to seeing Roland on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Roland assists TJ with daily living tasks but he also demonstrates throughout the process that he cares.
Roland did not consider being a Peer Mentor/Direct Service Provider prior to working with TJ, until another team member shared how he could make a difference. Each member of our staff is unique and seeks to make a difference in someone’s life in their own distinctive and gifted way. You can make a difference too! Each member is an artist in some form or another. Artistic work isn’t just limited to painting a picture or sketching. It is how you demonstrate compassion while using and sharing your own personal gifts and talents.
Our team members are 18 years of age or older. We look for mature and responsible providers and realize that wisdom and a willingness to learn are not limited by one’s age. Young or mature, we seek these qualities in our team members.
Our team members demonstrate kindness and have a willingness to invest in others. Peer mentoring is achieved through social interaction, direction and guidance, and learning the needs and aspirations of each individual. Each member of our staff goes through a carefully developed interview and in-depth training process specific to the individual. The goal is to support the individual in reaching their goal(s) for independent living, community access and engagement, and maximizing their potential as much as possible.
We seek caring individuals who are dependable and honest. We have paid trainings for staff. All employees have background checks and receive certification in CPR/First Aid. Our staff profile is multifaceted and includes college students as well at State Tested Nurse Aides (STNA’s) who completed their required coursework and passed the State of Ohio exam.
